Mekong Delta economic forum to discuss transport infrastructure development

Can Tho (VNA) - The Mekong Delta Economic Cooperation (MDEC) forum 2008 will be organised in July with the theme "Development of transport infrastructure in the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City in 2008," according to the Steering Board for the Southwestern Region, Can Tho city People's Committee and the MDEC Secretariat.

At a press conference on MDEC 2008 held in Can Tho city on June 18, Tran
Hoang, head of the MDEC Secretariat, introduced the five main programmes of
the forum.

They include a conference on transport infrastructure development in the
Mekong Delta, a conference on Mekong Delta cooperation promotion, an
exhibition on achievements and investment opportunities in transport
infrastructure in Vietnam and Can Tho, and a conference of leaders of
Mekong Delta provinces and cities and relevant ministries and services.

Especially, the Mekong Delta business forum is expected to draw more than
500 participants, including officials, scientists and entrepreneurs from
Mekong Delta provinces and cities and HCM City .

Lai Huu Lien, representative of the Steering Board for the Southwestern
Region, said that MDEC 2008 and a meeting in early July of leaders of Mekong
Delta localities' transport and communication departments and scientists
nationwide will gather opinions and proposals for the Board to propose to
the government to handle investment requirements of transport infrastructure
in the region.
