Russian Islamic community news roundup
MOSCOW, June 20 (Itar-Tass World Service) -- Talanted Muslim students in Russia's constituent republic of Mordovia will receive scholarships from Russia's astrophysicist of world renown. Rashid Sunyaev, a Crawford Award winner, director of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, has joined the individual scholarships program of the Mordovian mufti's office.
In February 2007 the Muslim Board of the Republic of Mordovia
instituted a program for personal scholarships to support talented Muslim students.
Those whose performance is excellent in all subjects are entitled to a 100-percent surplus to their grant. The sponsors - Moldova's leading businessmen and public figures - selected nominations for scholarship recipients at their own discretion.
Rashid Sunyaev, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has now
joined in. His parents have a rural background. Both are from villages of
Mordovia's Kadoskin district.
In his message to the Muslim Board the scientist spoke highly of the
initiative to create incentives for young talented men and women and said
it was a great honor for him to participate in such a noble undertaking.
The Sunyaev scholarship will be awarded to college and university
students specializing in physics, chemistry and mathematics.

A large share of Russia's population "respects or loves" the Prophet
Mohammed, as follows from the results of an opinion poll the Council of
Russia's Muftis and the cultural and education fund Nadezhda (Hope) held
last March.
Questions about the Prophet were put to people from different walks of
life and age groups - from school students to middle class office workers.
For the sake of obtaining objective results the pollsters focused on
people seldom visiting mosques and having no theological education. People
professing other faiths were questioned, too.
Most of the polled proved to have profound spiritual affection for the
personality of the Prophet Mohammed. Some described their attitude as
"respect", and others, as "love". Only a small share of the polled said
they were indifferent.
The Muslims regard the Prophet first and foremost as an envoy of One
and Unique God, and non-Muslims, as the founder of Islam.
Most appreciate the Prophet's doings highly or positively. Nobody made
negative comments.
Very few of the polled have "vast and authentic information" about the
Prophet Mohammed, though, and most said they would like to know more about
that outstanding personality.
