Toshiba, Kazatomprom sign memorandum on nuclear coop

Tokyo, June 20 (Itar-Tass) - The Japanese corporation Toshiba and the Kazakh national company Kazatomprom have signed a memorandum on
cooperation. The agreement envisages expanding interaction, including
production of complete equipment for nuclear power plants and creation of supply networks for nuclear power plants, the Toshiba press service reports on Friday.

The issue of joint use of beryllium, tantalum and other materials for nuclear power plants is also being studied.

In 2007, Toshiba acquired the right for share holding in the
development of a uranium ore mine in Kazakhstan, which ranks second in the
world according to its uranium reserves. At the same time, the Japanese
corporation let Kazatomprom have 10 percent of shares of the energy
company Westinghouse.

In March 2008, Toshiba also signed a frame agreement on cooperation
with the Russian company Atomenergoprom in construction of new nuclear
power plants in Russia, their maintenance and supply with fuel.

President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan is staying in Japan on a
visit. One of the main subjects of his talks with the Japanese side is
cooperation in the sphere of energy. Japan is interested in strengthening
relations with Kazakhstan in connection with growing requirements of
economy in raw materials and energy resources.
