PRESIDENT MEETS WITH J.M.BARROSO
Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ President of Mongolia Ts.Elbegdorj met Tuesday Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, during his visit to the European Union (EU) in Brussels, the Kingdom of Belgium.
The dignitaries mentioned about their meeting at the UN Climate Change Summit held in New York last September, where they co-chaired a session of the high-level meeting. They discussed the Mongolia-EU relations and cooperation.
Mongolia's President thanked the EU for supporting and cooperating with Mongolia since the country made its transition to the democracy and market economy. Elbegdorj said Mongolia intends to establish an agreement with the EU on partnership and cooperation, and expressed his confidence that this agreement will become "an important document to bring the bilateral cooperation into a newer step".
"The EU plays the key role in overcoming challenges facing not only its 27 members but also the humankind. We can see new atmosphere is being created at the world political arena by influence from the EU," Elbegdorj said.
Mr Barroso appreciated active participation of the Mongolian State Head in global measures. He underlined that Mongolia has proven its attracting international attention. Mr Barroso expressed his satisfaction with effects of support from the EU to Mongolia for ensuring democracy and human rights, enhancing skills and establishing a good governance. He noted the talks on the partnership and cooperation agreement are running successfully, and said he believes the agreement will be signed within this year.
"The European Commission has appreciated the Mongolia's President's announcing about abolishing the capital punishment in his country. I want to underline that this decision, was a brave and correct step in respecting human rights," said Mr Barroso.
The European Commission's President shared views with Elbegdorj on the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting held in Davos and Mongolia's participation in it, on worsening of overwintering in Mongolia, on decisions made by the Mongolian President.
