UAE donor organisations provide Dh26.4 million in emergency aid to Haiti earthquake victims
Abu Dhabi, Feb 10, 2010 (WAM)- The UAE Office for the Coordination of Foreign Aid (OCFA), established by a federal government mandate to support the nation's delivery of foreign humanitarian and development aid, announced that total emergency aid contributions made by UAE-based donor organisations to victims of the Haiti disaster have reached Dh26.4 million.
The latest aid figures have been reported by OCFA to the United Nations Financial Tracking Service, a global, on-line, real-time database of humanitarian funding needs and contributions (http://www.reliefweb.int/fts). Emergency supplies include consignments of food items, potable water, medical supplies, and non-food-items such as tents and blankets, as well as access to aid and medical personnel.
In addition to recording UAE aid donations with the UN, OCFA is also providing UAE-based organisations with Situation Reports that highlight on-ground developments and track the flow of aid from the UAE, helping identify gaps and ensuring maximum efficacy of committed resources.
Hazza Mohammed Falah Al Qahtani, Director General of OCFA, said: "Under the directives of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi and President of OCFA, OCFA is closely monitoring the humanitarian situation in Haiti in order to assess the victims' needs as they emerge, and communicate aid requirements with UAE-based donor organisations keen to support relief efforts. Our Situation Reports also provide updates on the flow of emergency supplies to enable the best allocation of all available resources.
Al Qahtani added: "UAE-based organisations are working very hard to ensure victims of the earthquake in Haiti receive the assistance they need to accelerate the recovery process. By reporting aid contributions to the UN, OCFA is providing a consolidated overview of the tremendous efforts of UAE-based donor organisations and the involvement of the UAE as a whole in the ongoing relief operations in Haiti." In a statement last week, Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive reported the disaster has left more than 200,000 dead and 300,000 injured, while other news agencies have reported 1.5 million people have been rendered homeless following the devastating earthquake that struck the Caribbean country in January.
According to figures disclosed by OCFA, the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has to date contributed more than Dh9.3 million including cash and two consignments of medical emergency aid and medical personnel for field deployment - the first consignment valued at Dh1.18 million and the second valued at Dh1.83 million. Last month the RCA, in coordination with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), delivered an aid consignment valued at Dh917,000, consisting of emergency shelter items and sanitary health supplies, as well as 100 tonnes of medical supplies and personnel, tents and blankets worth Dh4.46 million. A financial contribution of Dh550,000, made through the IFRC, will support the Haitian Red Cross in their relief operations, and the RCA has pledged a further Dh367,000 in aid supplies which will be delivered to earthquake victims shortly.
In January, the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation provided an in-kind contribution consisting of an assessment team and 77 tonnes of medical supplies and assorted food items, valued at Dh3.29 million. Last week the organisation pledged the delivery of a further 500 tonnes of food aid and medical supplies valued at Dh9.55 million.
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment has to date provided emergency aid worth Dh2.58 million, including Dh1 million worth of medical aid supplies; Dh1 million of potable water; Dh250,000 worth of food items; and in-kind contributions of canned foodstuffs and non-food-items such as tents and blankets valued at Dh330,000.
Dubai Cares pledged immediate educational assistance to 200,000 children, to be implemented in partnership with CARE International, UNICEF, Plan UK and Save the Children.
Dubai International Humanitarian City, in partnership with various UN agencies and local donor organisations, has to date contributed Dh1.65 million worth of aid towards coordination and support services.
OCFA was set up by UAE Cabinet decree no. 36 for the year 2008 and has been operational since early 2009 to help UAE foreign aid donors improve delivery of humanitarian and development programmes worldwide. With HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi, presiding as the office's President, OCFA is engaged in assessing foreign aid donor needs; providing appropriate training programmes and knowledge transfers; and, building and strengthening ties between the UAE foreign aid sector and the international aid community, by providing multiple platforms that bring international and local aid organisations together.
