Abu Dhabi Municipality to reset the greenery in the city

Abu Dhabi, Feb 11, 2010 (WAM)- The Abu Dhabi Municipality is currently engaged in properly-guided efforts to re-shape the greenery all over the city as well as on external roads to bring them at par with standards, taking into consideration the intensification of windbreaks for protecting the environment, preserving the soil and landscaping the area.
The civic body estimated that the area of windbreaks and plantations on streets, districts and roadsides within the Island of Abu Dhabi at 1250 hectares and that there were over 5.5 million trees outside the island spanning an area of over 27,000 hectares.
The project is intended to establish a proper base for setting up forests, greenbelts and various windbreaks in addition to the implementation of well-rehearsed forestation expansion plans and developing plans '&' programmes highlighting the role of various parks and forests in protecting the environment. It is also aimed at intensifying plantation of forest shelterbelts and windbreaks around the city, farms and main roadsides.
Engineer Ahmed Al Muraikhi, Director of Parks and Recreation Facilities Division at the Municipality, stated that in addition to landscaping Abu Dhabi's streets and areas, the project aimed at mitigating the impact of winds and sand storms, as well as sand-dune fixation in order to stop sand creep and enhance site environment (reducing evaporation, gross product, erosion, denudation and drift) to secure an appropriate environment for all.
He added that "The pioneering tree and shrub species used in forest projects and primary plantation programmes as well as plantations on external roads which constitute natural windbreaks are the native and non-native ones which are more resistant to the prevailing environmental conditions such as the Ghaf, Ghuwaif, Arak, Sidr, Date Palm, Samr, Qaradh, Kenia, Dims, Salam, Fatna, Talah, among others which proved to be resistible to local environmental conditions".
Al Muraikhi continued: "Apart from its considerable achievements in the field of plantation and landscaping made over many decades, the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City continues to renew and strengthen its achievements in such a way as to serve the community and environment and maintain the public health, particularly since the success of plantation in general and parks, sanctuaries, planted areas and forest belts would contribute directly to creating a healthy environment that is more appropriate to human life and strengthen the growth of many plantation species within the environment of their existence. This would support stability of many planted and protected areas".
He pointed out that the districts and roads of the capital city were considered as the most places of the city where natural breaks concentrate for two specific purposes, namely enhancing the aesthetic aspect and impacting the environmental conditions of the locality.
Al Muraikhi stressed: "Apart from its significance in preserving the environment and fostering community sanitation, greenery constitutes an addition to the tourist potentials of Abu Dhabi, particularly as agricultural beautification projects are being dedicated considerable attention in terms of qualification, development taking into consideration heritage, traditions and local environmental elements.
Abu Dhabi houses 32 public parks spanned over an area of 330 hectares. These locations act as points of attraction and recreation for the inhabitants of the city of Abu Dhabi as the number of visitors of fenced parks is in excess of 1.2 million p.a., but the unfenced parks attracts several folds of this number.
