Uzbek president arrives in Seoul for official visit on Wed.
SEOUL, February 11 (Itar-Tass) -- Issues of intensification of
economic cooperation, including development of gas fields in the Uzbek
region of Surguil and modernization of the airport Navoi which is to be turned into a major transport center of Central Asia will be in the focus of attention of a summit meeting between the presidents of South Korea and Uzbekistan.
President Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan arrived in Seoul for a
three-day official visit at the invitation of President Lee Myung-bak.
During talks, the sides will also discuss the two countries'
interaction in the sphere of politics, agriculture, culture and
environmental protection. The summit participants are expected to touch
upon regional and international problems.
During the visit, Islam Karimov will also meet with Prime Minister
Zheng Yuncan, speaker of the National Assembly Kim Hyong-o, as well as
members of the South Korean government.
Official Seoul expects the Uzbek president's state visit will "promote
the strengthening of strategic partnership in the two countries' relations
within the framework of "a new Asian diplomacy" pursued by the South
Korean government. This was said at the administration of the South Korean
president.
President Lee Myung-bak visited Tashkent in May 2009.
On the eve of the summit, South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and
Foreign Trade Yu Myung-hwan met with Deputy Prime Minster and Minister of
Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade of Uzbekistan Elyor
Ganiyev. As a spokesman for the South Korean Foreign Ministry said, during
the meeting the sides agreed to intensify trade and economic cooperation.
Upon the conclusion of the meeting, a number of bilateral agreements
was signed. In accordance with these agreements, South Korea will invest
8.65 million dollars in Uzbekistan. In particular, before the end of the
current year, four pumping stations worth 1.5 million dollars will be
built in the Khorezmskaya region to provide the local population with
fresh water. Another three million dollars will be given to Uzbekistan to
combat infectious diseases. Besides, the two countries signed a memorandum
on military and technical cooperation.
