India, UK sign joint declaration on nuclear cooperation
New Delhi/London, Feb 11 (PTI) India and the UK Thursday
signed a joint declaration for civil nuclear cooperation, a
move that is expected to help facilitate entry of British
companies in the emerging atomic power sector here.
India's Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Srikumar
Banerjee and British High Commissioner Richard Stagg signed a
Joint Declaration on Civil Nuclear Cooperation here.
"The declaration will help promotion and facilitation of
wide-ranging cooperation in the nuclear field including in
nuclear trade and also between scientific institutions of the
two countries," an official statement said here.
"This is a huge opportunity for both countries as we have
significant expertise in this field and India has an ambitious
programme," Pat McFadden, Britain's Minister for Business,
Innovation and Skills told PTI in London.
The agreement will be a big step forward for India and
the UK to be able to work together in this very important
area, said McFadden, who begins his week-long visit to India
on Friday.
Britain and India had finalised the joint declaration
text earlier this month during Indian Commerce Minister Anand
Sharma's visit to London for the UK-India Joint Economic Trade
Committee meet.
UK Trade and Investment, the British government's trade
arm, had said that British companies were keen to collaborate
with Indian partners in civil nuclear technology. MORE PTI
