PK Lime to build first lime factory in Laos

VIENTIANE,FEB 12 (KPL) - The PK Lime Company plans to build the first limestone factory in Khammouane province with an investment of US$9 million.
The company signed a contract on limestone mining and processing with the Lao government in Vientiane last Thursday. The signatories to the contact were Director General of the PK Lime Company, Dr. Vivone Khotgnotha, and Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, Mr. Thongmy Phomvisay.
The company is now mining limestone in some villages of Se Bangfay district, central Khammouane province.
The company will start mining limestone on 50 ha of land in some villages, according to President of the PK Lime Company Limited, Mr. Vilong Khotnhotha. “After a survey in 2007, the company has found that the area has an abundant deposit of limestone.”
“Our company will start to produce lime for domestic market in 2012 and we hope that its annual production capacity would be around 100,000 tonnes of lime,” said Mr. Vilong.
Mr. Vilong said that to ensure such an annual output the factory needed over 200,000 tonnes of limestone for its production.
He continues that lime produced from the factory would be used in the production of gold, copper, iron and tin and the manufacturing of medicines, paint, toothpaste, sugar and pulp.
More than 100 people are expected to get job employment with the company.
“This development would contribute to the socio-economic development in the country and the national industrial growth in the future,” said Mr. Vilong.
Annually, Laos imports over 100,000 tonnes of lime from Thailand, which is valued at more than US$10 million.
