H1N1 vaccination process to cover chronic illnesses
Abu Dhabi, Feb 17, 2010 (WAM)- In line with the H1N1 national vaccination strategy, the Health Authority - Abu Dhabi (HAAD), the regulatory body of the healthcare sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, issued a circular to all healthcare facilities in the Emirate on the H1N1 vaccination process for patients with chronic diseases.
The stage of the vaccination process will cover a list of chronic diseases identified by HAAD including Cardiac Disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Chronic Metabolic Diseases, Asthma and Chronic Lung Disease, Renal Disease, Hematologic Disorders, Severe Obesity, Hepatic Disease, Immunisuppresion (including immunisuppresion caused by disease or medication such as human immunodeficiency virus or cancer, or those on chronic steroids) and Neurological / Neuromuscular Disorders.
Dr. Jamal Al Mutawa, Section Head of Communicable Diseases at HAAD, said: "Patients with chronic diseases are a top priority group for H1N1 vaccine simply because they are at increased risk to catch the H1N1 infection and subsequently develop serious complications.
The vaccine is a safe effective protection not only to priority groups but also to the entire community. Taking the vaccine today will protect you from catching H1N1 and help in minimising the spread of the virus," Dr. Al Mutawa added.
Public healthcare facilities are to organise the vaccination process to cover their patients suffering from the above mentioned chronic diseases.
Patients with chronic diseases who are receiving care at private hospitals / clinics will be vaccinated at the public hospitals and public clinics upon presenting a referral letter from their physician.
The referral letter from the private sector hospitals/ clinics should include sufficient data about the condition of the patient and relevant clinical information.
