PRESIDENT REMINDS ALL PARTIES TO KEEP PROMISES
Jakarta, Feb 20 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono reminded all people here on Saturday to be firm and consistent in realizing the promises they have made regardless of their positions now.
He made the call in his speech at the commemoration of the Imlek Day 2561 at the Jakarta Convention Center, in line with the theme of the event which was "Once a promise is made even four horses will not be able to draw it back."
"The wisdom is actually not only given to Confucian followers or ethnic Chinese but also to me as well as Pak (Mr) Budi (the chief of Matakin)," the President said.
The head of state said the wisdom needed to be followed and referred to whenever one made a promise.
"In the context of nationhood and statehood after local and national elections, as of 2010, it is time for those receiving a mandate to work hard and realize what they have promised. We have have all made promises and therefore are obliged to meet them. Although it is not always easy they have to meet them without reasons," he said.
The President also said in every competition including local and national elections there are always winners and losers.
"In every competition there is always a winner and a loser. Before the competition usually candidates promise to be ready to win or to lose and in this case both winner and loser remain respected. Let us respect each other, the winner reaching out to the loser and the loser supporting the winner so that he can carry out his duties," he said.
In another part of his speech the head of state called on Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar, Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali and Education Minister Muhammad Nuh to safeguard the government's policy so that Confucianists will continue to enjoy the same rights as adherents of other religions.
"In the future I ask religious affairs and law and human rights ministers to keep increasing the quality of their services to Confucianists , respect their civil rights in line with Law Number 12 of 2006 with regard to citizenship. You (ethnic Chinese) must not feel uncertain. No discrimination is allowed," he said.
The event was also attended by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Vice President Boediono and his wife Herawati Boediono, Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, former Constitutional Court chairman Jimly Ashidiqqie, Minister for Women's Role and Child Protection Linda Amalia Sari and other state officials.***
