NO COMPROMISE YET OVER BANK CENTURY CASE : OBSERVER
Jakarta, Feb 20 (ANTARA) - A political observer said here on Saturday no compromise had been reached with regard to the conclusions of the House Bank Century Inquiry Committee.
"The emergence of an exchange of threats and psy-war recently reflects their inability to reach a compromise. As a compromise over the Century case has not yet been achieved they bring it to the public. However, if a compromise is reached the tension will decline," Burhanuddin Muhtadi said to ANTARA.
Muhtadi who is also a researcher of the Indonesia Survey Institute (LPS) said the public must therefore watch the political developments before the committee brings its final conclusions to the plenary meeting of the House of Representatives on March 2.
He said lobbying in various forms still continued to happen as marked by the emergence of threats such as a cabinet reshuffle, plan to bring tax evaders to court and offer of cabinet positions to political parties.
He said there had been a tug of war ahead of the issuance of the final conclusions of the committee between the ruling Democrat Party and Golkar Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).
"There will be four conclusions on four issues namely merger of banks to become Bank Century, the extension of the short-term funding facility (FPJP), the decision to bail out Bank Century and the flow of funds," he said.
He said the merger and flow of funds issues would not become a serious problem because the two occured before current vice president Boedinoo became a central bank governor.
Regarding the flow of funds in the Century Bank all nine political factions in the committee agreed that there were indications of crimes being committed in it. Only the Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) stated that there were indications of corruption in it.
"If the flow of funds is declared unlawful the case would be a mere banking case and it would be blamed on the Century Bank management," he said.
It is the other two issues namely FPJP and the Century Bank bailout that would be the cause for a tug of war between the Democrat Party and its partners in the coalition particularly Golkar and PKS, he said.
This is because if the two are declared being against the law they would affect two officials namely vice president Boediono and finance minister Sri Mulyani.
Boediono was the central bank governor while Sri Mulyani was then the finance miniter and also chairperson of the Financial System Stability Committee when they decided on the two issues.
"The Democrat Party is worried because there is no guarantee it will not cause a domino effect on the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, if the two officials are declared guilty and therefore the Democrat Party is trying to defend them," he said.
Burhanuddin who is also a lecturer of the Paramdina University said in the near future the public would see differences among political factions in the House of Representatives regarding the degree of responsibility and mistakes in connection with the injection of Rp6.7 trillion into the Century Bank in 2008 considered a must to prevent a systemic effect.***
