INDONESIA'S JAMBI PROVINCE TRADE AUTHORITIES WATCH CHINESE PRODUCTS
Jambi, Jambi, Feb 21 (ANTARA) - Jambi provincial trade and industrial authorities vowed here Sunday to tighten their surveillance for imported Chinese products to protect local consumers.
Head of the Jambi trade and industry office, Izhar Muzani, said, in conducting the surveillance, his men coordinated with local food and drug agency workers.
He said the majority of the Chinese products infiltrating the Jambi market were food, beverages, and drugs.
Therefore the consumers need to be more cautious with any healthy requirements and valid labels.
Its illegal products are often found among local products on the Jambi market. Therefore the buyers should be more selective in choosing the imported products, particularly those from China, he said.
"The products need to have the health ministry`s legal approval. If our customers find the products without such valid approvals, we ask them to report such products to us, the Food and Drugs Supervisory Agency (BPOM)," he said.
Far before the official implementation of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) in January 2010, various imported Chinese products easily found their way into the Jambi markets, he said.
However, he presumed that the ACFTA did not have too much affect on the province`s economy, especially that of Jambi city, because the Chinese products remained dominated by food, drinks and medicines.
The products of the local industries could still survive amid the flood of Chinese products though his office remained cautious with the long-term threat to local business people, Izhar Muzani said.
In conducting the surveillance Jambi`s trade and industrial authorities also worked with the police to keep an eye on the inflow of foreign products into the province.
"Jambi is prone to the infiltration of foreign products as a result of its geographical location," he said.
The efforts to strengthen consumer protection in Indonesia had previously been hinted by Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu.
In her press briefing in Jakarta on February 16, Pangestu said that her ministry would even establish a directorate general for consumer protection and standardization.
The formation of the directorate general was part of the trade ministry`s reorganization and bureaucratic reform in order to strengthen consumer protection in the country, she said.
The move was introduced following the implementation of ACFTA, which had triggered public debates.
Concerning its negative impacts on the Indonesian economy, some had even called on the government to renegotiate the agreement with China.
As of January 2010, ACFTA is entering the Normal Track (NT) I phase, imposing a zero percent tariff on 7,306 products or 83.61 percent of total tariffs on imported 8,738 products.
