US accreditation to boost IAT status

Abu Dhabi, Feb 22, 2010 (WAM)- HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has commended the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) over obtaining academic accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in the U.S. and for establishing principles of technological and occupational education.
The remarks were made during the reception of Chairman of Board of Trustees of IAT, Engineer Hussein Ibrahim Al Hammadi by Sheikh Mohammed.
The IAT is the first educational institution in the region to get the international academic accreditation of its five branches in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. The SACS is one of the prestigious institutions for the academic accreditation in the U.S. and the world.
SACS accreditation will position the IAT among the world's elite of vocational and technological institutes and grant its students admission right to world's most prominent higher education institutes.
The IAT boasts to be the first higher education facility to obtain this international prestigious recognition in the region for its five campuses in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah.
The accreditation standards and process are based on ongoing self-assessment against the quality standards, rigorous on-site evaluation, and continuous improvement.
The accreditation standards serve as the foundation for the accreditation process. The seven standards and accompanying indicators are tied directly to the research on factors that impact student learning. The seven standards address the following areas:
1. Vision and Purpose
2. Governance and Leadership
3. Teaching and Learning
4. Documenting and Using Results
5. Resources and Support Systems
6. Stakeholder Communications and Relationships
7. Commitment to Continuous Improvement Accredited schools adhere to the standards and use them as a tool for ongoing self-assessment.
To prepare for the SACS review, the IAT completed compiled standards assessment report which engaged the school community in an in-depth self assessment of each of the seven standards. It helped the school identify areas of strength and opportunities for improvement and provided the review team with a starting point for their work.
Interviews were conducted with 400 of students, parents, teachers and administrators as well as representatives of companies and community.
A 10-member Quality Assurance Review team visited the five campuses to Evaluate the school's adherence to the standards, assess the effectiveness of the School's improvement efforts, review performance results and how those results are used to inform improvement efforts, provide high-quality feedback with clear recommendations and actionable next steps and make an accreditation recommendation.
