NEWS FROM KHOVSGOL PROVINCE
Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ Khovsgol, the northern province of Mongolia, is home to 8,570 elders belonging to 5,408 families. There are six centenarians the oldest of whom is 104 years.
Out of total elders 5,207 are working in private sector planting potatoes and vegetables. Last year, 860 elders harvested 9.8 tons of vegs contributing thus to the local economy.

Within Mongolia, the Khovsgol region is well-known for its natural beauty, and Lake Khovsgol is one of the major tourist attractions. The largest forest areas of Mongolia are located around and to the north of the lake, extending the south-Siberian Taiga. Khovsgol is also famed by its reindeer farming development. Recently, 20 more reindeers were brought to Khovsgol from the Russian Tuva Republic with the aim of hybridizing its herd of reindeers. Of them five are male reindeers and 15 are female ones. In 2009, there were 1,018 reindeers in the province, the local authorities say. This year, reindeer herder community is planning to mark the celebration of 1,000 head of reindeers in September.
