Friendship insignia presented to JICA experts

VIENTIANE,FEB 22 (KPL) - On 18 February, on behalf of the Lao government, Planning and Investment Minister Sinlavong Khoudphaythoun, conferred the Friendship insignia and Labour medal on outgoing Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Chief and Deputy Chief Mr. Takashima Hiroaki and Mr. Koichi Takei, respectively, in recognition of their three years’ work in the Lao PDR.
The presentation took place in a ceremony held at the Ministry of Planning and Investment in Vientiane and was attended by Charge d’ Affaires of the Embassy of Japan to Laos, Mr Shiteru Omori. The presentation authorised by a prime ministerial decree to recognise the work of foreigners, their performance and achievements in contribution to the development of Laos.
JICA is the agency-coordinator of official development assistance for the government of Japan. It is charged with assisting economic and social growth in developing countries.
Over the past three years, about 10 development projects have been carried out each year. These focused on infrastructure construction, technical assistance, case study and project design, and expert and volunteer provision worth US$80 million per year. The main Laos-Japan cooperation projects in this period were the building of primary and lower secondary schools in the southern provinces.
In Vientiane, they included the construction of a water supply plant in Kaoliao, a new bridge at Hinheub, and the Laos-Japan Budo Sport Centre.
Other projects included a preparatory survey on the formulation of basic strategies for regional core cities development, and a capacity building project to strengthen the agricultural statistics system.
