PADANG POLICE DETAINEE DIES

Padang, W Sumatra, Feb 23 (ANTARA) - A detainee of the West Sumatra police died on Tuesday after being treated for an illness for three days at Padang city's M.Jamil public hospital.

When arrested by the police on February 3 for selling illegal gambling coupons, the 60-year-old Syafruddin's health condition was "good", said Yudi, Syafruddin's son.

"After staying in the police's cell for a week, my father fell ill," he said.

Deputy Chief of Padang city police Ajunct Commissioner Wisnu Handoko said the exact causes of the detainee's death were not yet available.

He promised to question his men about Syafruddin's death, he said.
