S`PORE NAVY DISTRIBUTES LIFE JACKETS TO FISHERMEN

Karimun, Riau Islands, Indonesia, Feb 23 (ANTARA) - The Singapore Navy distributed life jackets to traditional fishermen in Tanjungbatu, Riau Islands, as part of safety campaign efforts on Tuesday.

The actvity was part of the XVIII/2010 Indonesia-Singapore Social Charity Service (ISBS) centralized in the district of Karimun, Riau Islands, from Monday until Thursday.

The chief of the Karimun naval base, Lt Col Edwin said in Tanjung Balai Karimun on Tuesday total jackets distributed to the fishermen reached 200 hundreds in addition to other safety equipment.

"One hundred from the Singapore Navy and the rest from the Tanjung Balai Karimun naval base," he said.

Edwin said the jackets were handed over by the commander of the ISBS XVIII/2010 Taskforce and Singapore Navy delegation leader Lt Col Lee Weng Foo.

He said the aim of the activity was increasing awareness on safety especially among traditional fishermen who often sail using small boats.

"The risk faced by the fishermen is big moreover during tidal waves," he said.

He hoped the jackets could be used while fishing and so they could use them in case of an incident.

Edwin said other activities carried out in the framework of ISBS were free medication service and counseling on maritime matters for fishermen and school students.

"We will also distribute bags to orphans and school students tomorrow on Wednesday," he said.

He said the ISBS is a routine activity carried out jointly by the Singapore and Indonesia Navies to increase coordination for security of the Straits of Philips and Malacca against illegal activities such as smuggling and others.

"The cooperation is important as Indonesia directly bordering with Singapore is only separated by the straits," he said.***
