Iran renews call for swapping nuclear fuel on its soil

TEHRAN, Feb. 24 (MNA) – Iran has said it is willing to swap its low-grade uranium for high-grade uranium should the nuclear fuel exchange be carried out on its own territory.

In a new letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iran said it is prepared for a fuel swap even though the country does not regard this condition of supplying fuel to the Tehran research reactor through a swap as correct, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said during his weekly news briefing on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, in order to build a constructive interaction Tehran has declared its readiness for nuclear fuel swap provided it is done within the country, Mehmanparast explained.

In a letter to IAEA chief Yukiya Amano, dated February 18, Tehran’s envoy to the IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, wrote, “I would like to inform the agency, on behalf of my government, that the Islamic Republic of Iran is still seeking to purchase the required fuel in cash.”

Iran calls on IAEA director to amend report

Mehmanparast also said that Iran, in its letter, requested an amendment to the IAEA director’s recent report about the country’s nuclear program.

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said in his report, released on Thursday, that Iran started enriching nuclear fuel without informing the agency. However, Iran had notified the IAEA before it began enriching uranium to the 20 percent level and asked the agency to send inspectors to monitor the enrichment process.

Amano is scheduled to deliver his next report to the IAEA Board of Governors on March 1.

In its letter, Iran has named a few mistakes made in the report and asked for an amendment to them, Mehmanparast stated.

Iran will not withdraw from NPT

Mehmanparast said that Iran will not withdraw from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and will continue its cooperation with the IAEA.

However, the country will not cooperate beyond its legal commitments.

Iran to file a lawsuit against U.S.

Mehmanparast said that Iran plans to file a lawsuit against the U.S. for illegal arrest of Iranian nationals.

Iranian nationals are encouraged through the internet to sell and buy certain goods in the U.S. but then are arrested on charges of trading double-use goods, he noted.

U.S. does not even respect the consular rights of the Iranian nationals, he added.

He went on to say that some moves by Iran in defending the rights of its citizens have yielded positive results. He added Iran is seriously pursuing the case of its nationals held in U.S.
