Stone foundation-laying for new City Pillar Shrine held

VIENTIANE ,FEB 24 (KPL) - President Choummaly Sayasone, Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh and other top Party members and government officials yesterday joined a stone foundation-laying ceremony for the construction of the new City Pillar Shrine at Phiavath village, Sisattanark district, Vientiane Capital.
President Choummaly said that the shrine would be a symbol of national unity of Lao people and also an indication of the strength and heroism in national defence and the civilization and prosperity of Vientiane in the era of Lane Xang Kingdom.
“The Vientiane new City Pillar Shrine will serve as an evidence of historical value of the Lao nation, which would be a symbol of Vientiane Capital in the new era of civilisation and modernisation under the brilliant guidance of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party,” he added.
The Vientiane new city pillar hall will be built on an area of 1,500 sqm, and is estimated to cost 15 billion kip. The construction will be over in 2011, said Minister of Information and Culture Mr. Mounkeo Oraboune.
On 16 January, 2007, 193 artifacts were found during an archaeological excavation before commencing the construction of Road No 1.
Late last year, 225 inscription stones were discovered during the land clearing for the construction of the Vientiane new City Pillar Shrine and another discovery of some 55 inscription stones came last month, according to the report of Mr Mounkeo.
The artifacts were dated in 1540, 20 years before Vientiane was proclaimed the national capital of the ancient Lane Xang Kingdom, currently Laos. The president also called on the private sector and other charity persons to make contribution to the construction.
