PRESIDENT PARTICIPATES IN MASS PRAYER SERVICE ON PPROPHET`S BIRTHDAY
Jakarta, Feb 26 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono took part in a mass prayer service to mark the Prophet Muhammad's birthday at the National Monument (Monas) Square here on Friday morning.
The service began at 8.45 am and was attended by many prayer groups from across Jakarta.
On Thursday night, the president also hosted a function to observe the Prophet Muhammad's birthday at the State Palace. The anniversary celebration on Thursday night was also attended by Vice President Boediono, United Indonesia Cabinet members and ambassadors of Islamic countries.
In his address at the State Palace event, Yudhoyono reminded the audience of the ethics and good manners taught by the Prophet Muhammad in the political and democratic life.
He said the good lesson given by the great prophet in the field of democracy and political life was an example of high wisdom and a celebration of harmony.
"The democracy we should promote is a democracy with a full mandate of ethics, decency and the upholding of a noble attitude, not a democracy based on mutual hostility and destruction," he said.
He said democracy in Indonesia should also mean refraining from tyrannical rule by a strong group and coercion harmful to justice.
"Democracy must be courteous and ethical, as exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad," the president said.***
