RI`S ENVIRONMENTAL COOPERATION WITH OTHER COUNTRIES WORKING : MINISTER

Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, Feb 26 (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Gusti M Hatta said he had received delegations from 15 countries during the environment ministerial-level meeting here from February 22 to 26.

"Bilateral cooperation has been smooth. While here I received delegations from 15 countries such as from Norway, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, France, Iran and Algeria," he said to ANTARA here on Friday.

He said Germany that had extended funds for living environment programs wished to continue its cooperation with Indonesia while Algeria now leading the African Union Organization (OAU) had expressed support to Indonesia and offered to help Indonesia in developing its cooperation with African nations.

The minister said the EXCOP meeting here on February 22-23 had produced an important decision.

The Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions used to hold meetings by themselves but this time they held a meeting together and made an agreement, he said.

The three conventions have agreed to conduct joint activities, auditing, managerial functions and service, he said.

This is good as it will make the activities of the three conventions more efficient, he said.

But "they remain to have own secretariates," he said.

Gusti Hatta said the delegation from Mexico was happy that the meeting attended by around 40 ministers and 1,000 participants from 130 countries was held in Bali and he could learn the country's success in holding big meetings.

Mexico will be the host of the conference on climate change (UNFCCC) in November-December 2010, following the meeting in Copenhagen last year.

The EXCOP and the environment ministerial-level meeting were held jointly by the Indonesian government and the UNEP.***
