PRESIDENT`S ACTION NEEDED TO RESOLVE BANK CENTURY ISSUE : AMIEN

Solo, Indonesia, Feb 26 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono must act "firmly but wisely" to resolve the Bank Century issue to prevent the further erosion of the government's image, senior politician Amien Rais said here Friday.

The chief patron of the National Mandate Party (PAN) was commenting on the fact that at least three parties in the House Bank Century Inquiry Committee had named Vice President Boediono, a former Bank Indonesia governor, and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani among a number of serving and former state officials considered responsible for the controversial bailout of the failed bank.

"If the two figures (Boediono and Sri Mulyani) are to be called to account for the Rp6.7 trillion Bank Century bailout , SBY should be ready and willing to find their replacements," Amien told reporters after attending a Prophet Muhammad birthday observation service.

"SBY should find two replacements to his liking and seek the convening of an MPR (People's Consultative Assembly) plenary session," he said.

If Boediono and Sri Mulyani were removed from their positions, "the people will accept it, the students will stop demonstrating, and the media will cease raising the issue," according to the former MPR chief.

He admitted that in firing the two figures there would be the risk of the government becoming "a little shaky" , the more so, if one or both of them resigned.

"However, if the government does not take action, the demonstrations will continue, and this can erode its image," he said.

Amien said the PAN faction in the House Bank Century Inquiry Committee had not mentioned any names in its final view on who was responsible in the case, "but it did so by implication."

But regardless of whether or not any persons were named in the inquiry, "no top officials can logically be held responsible for the Bank Century case other than Boediono as the then Bank Indonesia governor and Sri Mulyani as the then chairperson of the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK)," he said.

If the two continued to be protected, there would be bigger demonstrations, and the government's image would be impaired to a degree where it would be difficult to implement development programs properly, Amien said.

PAN is officially one of a number of political parties in a coalition with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Democrat Party (PD).***
