WE WANT YOU TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MONGOLIA
(continuation)
To be seated next to the hoimor is the greatest honor, kept for elders, chiefs, shamans or guests. The west side (left as you enter) is for men and a storage place for men's tools, saddles, bows and guns. The east (right as you enter) is where the women sit, and where cooking utensils, cradleboards and other women's objects are kept.
The young people are usually seated, and sleep, closer to the door (to the south). Given the needs of a nomadic lifestyle, the furniture is very basic. It usually consists of several standard chests and shelves, with a number of small tables, which can be moved around.
The family altar, the marriage bed, and most other objects have a defined place and function, maintained fairly formally. The furniture is set in a certain position, and both family members and visitors ordinarily never move the heavy cushions upon which most people sit from one place to another.
