POLICE KILL SUSPECTED ACEH GANG MEMBER, COMB COUNTRYSIDE FOR MORE
Banda Aceh, March 3 (ANTARA) - Police combing the Padang Piji region of Pidie district for suspected armed gang members on Wednesday morning shot dead one of them while he was traveling in a public bus on the Banda Aceh-Medan route.
A similar operation took place at the same time in the Gampong Beuringin region of Aceh Besar district, about 70 km from Banda Aceh, as part of the police`s search for members of a suspected terror group.
The search was launched after police recently raided a location in a forest in Aceh Besar district used as what was believed to be a terrorist training ground. In the raid, police arrested a number of suspects and seized a few fire arms and some ammunition as well as incriminating documents.
Gampong Beuringin residents who are mainly farmers on Wednesday went about their daily activities as usual although their village was full of combat-ready policemen.
Members of the Aceh Police`s Mobile Brigade and Special Anti-Terror Detachment 88 (Densus 88) had been in the Gampong Beuringin region since early Wednesday morning to search for illegal gunmen belonging to the suspected terror group.
A police source told an Antara reporter, the security forces were looking for suspected terrorists who were hiding in the region`s forests but would possibly approach residential areas to meet their logistical needs.
The police had also blocked a number of roads connecting the Gampong Beuringin region with other parts of Aceh Besar district. The region is located about 10 km from the Banda Aceh-Medan highway.
In their search for the terror suspects the police were also using sniffer dogs.
