FLOOD INUNDATES HUNDREDS OF HOUSES IN BEKASI, W JAVA

Bekasi, West Java, March 4 (ANTARA) - A flood caused by the overflowing of the Bekasi river inundated hundreds of houses at the Pondok Mitra Lestari (PML) housing complex, Jati Asih sub district, Bekasi, West Java Province, here on Thursday.

"The flood occurred from 00.30 am to 4.00 am local time. The floodwaters came from Bagor and flowed into the Bekasi river, while there had been no rains since last night," Mrs. Arum Rudianto (31), a resident of the PML, said here on Thursday.

The housing complex had been hit by floods twice since Feb. 19. Local inhabitants are used to floods as their housing complex is located on lower ground.

Nico, another local resident of PML, recalled that he and his family were sound sleep when the flood started.

"While we were asleep, I suddenly heard a mosque coordinator alerting people about the flood through a loudspeaker. I woke up and passed on the information to neighbors," he said.

The housing complex was inundated up to a height of one meter.

Earlier, floods which had been hitting Bandung district, had expanded to wider areas and submerged the Baleendah-Bojongsoang road.

The Dayeuhkolot-Bojongsoang road connecting southern Bandung and Bandung City, were submerged by the floodwaters. The Baleendah-Bojongsoang road is an alternative way connecting the two areas.

The Baleendah-Bojongsoang road was inundated by 30 centimeter-deep floodwaters, causing a bad traffic jam. Thousands of houses were flooded, forcing local inhabitants to evacuate to safer areas.

Indonesia is now in the rainy season which has triggered floods in many parts of the country including Jakarta, Jambi (Sumatra), Pandeglang (Banten Province), Bandung and Kerawang (West Java), West Sumatra, South Sumatra Province, South Sulawesi, and Kudus (Central Java).

Torrential rains showering the West Java town of Banjar recently triggered floods and landslides.
