PRESIDENT : KOFI ANNAN IMPORTANT FIGURE FOR WORLD
Jakarta, March 4 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Kofi Annan, former UN secretary general, was an important figure for the world.
Annan had made great contributions during the ten years he served at the United Nations (UN), Yudhoyono said when receiving Annan at the State Palace here on Thursday.
"Annan always paid great attention to human rights, MDGs, Climate Change, conflict resolution, counter-terrorism, and world peace missions. Therefore, he deserves the Noble Prize," the head of state said.
Annan also played important roles in matters affecting Indonesia , including the 2004 tsunami which devastated Aceh and Nias Island (North Sumatra), he said.
"I remember when he was the UN secretary general, he attended a tsunami summit organized 10 days after the tsunami (December 2004) at my invitation. He came all the way from New York to help Indonesia, and he also came when Indonesia hosted the second Asia-Africa Conference in May 2005. Our relationships with Kofi Annan span a long period of time," the president said.
"Indonesia is currently in a transformation process, not only reform, after the crisis. Our national agenda is to continue economic development to improve the people's welfare, reduce the poverty rate, open more job opportunities, and improve the quality of the people's life. We want a more mature democracy," Yudhoyono said.
He said Indonesia would continue to play active roles internationally, including in participating in peace keeping missions, in helping strengthen the global economy, in curbing global climate change and fighting terrorism.
Kofi Annan gave a presidential lecture which was attended by among others Vice President Boediono, and a number of cabinet ministers.
Annan of Ghana , the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, served from 1997 to 2006 and was the first person to rise to the position from among the ranks of United Nations staff.***
