SRI MULYANI : ``I UPHELD THE ESSENTIAL TRUTH" IN RESCUING CENTURY``

Jakarta, March 4 (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said, in deciding to bail out the failed Bank Century in 2008, she had upheld the "essential truth" in accordance with her authority and the law.

"In this case (the bailout) I took my cue from the essential truth, not from political truth, based on the authority vested in me," the minister said in her address on the Draft State Budget at a House plenary here on Thursday.

Mulyani said she had agreed since the beginning that a legal process be undertaken against those suspected to have committed crimes with regard to the Bank Century bailout scandal.

"I will not give a direct response now. The government, in this case President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, will in time make his opinion known," the minister told the House.

The minister also acknowledged she would first study the decision made on Wednesday by the House which stated that the extension of the Bank Century bailout was problematic.

She said what she had decided at in 2008 was based on her authority in accordance with the law.

Mulyani said the bailout was provided in an effort to overcome and reduce the impact of the global economic crisis.

The majority of House of Representatives (DPR) members said in a vote on Wednesday that violations had happened in the Bank Century bailout.

Of the 537 members attending the plenary session, 325 voted for "Option C" (a statement ridiculing the bailout) and the other 212 for "Option A" (a statement justifying the bailout).

The government provided a bailout amounting to Rp6.7 trillion for ailing Bank Century during the global financial crisis in late 2008.

Sri Mulyani, who at that time was chief of the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK), and Boediono who was Bank Indonesia governor, now vice president, were mentioned as the most responsible persons in the Century bank case.***
