BI UNDERSTANDS HOUSE RECOMMENDATIONS ON CENTURY CASE
Jakarta, Feb 4 (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia said the decision and recommendations of the House Century Inquiry Committee which were discussed at the House plenary on Wednesday should be understood as a result of a political process .
Director of Bank Indonesia (BI) for strategic planning Dyah NK Makhijani said in a press statement on Thursday that the central bank could understand the decision as a result of a political process.
Makhijani hoped that the next process would proceed as justly as possible and the principle of presumption of innocence would be respected.
She said that so far BI was very cooperative where all the needed data and information were provided by BI for the inquiry committee.
But BI regretted the House factions' views which ignored facts on the crisis dimension which served as the basis for the government to issue the bailout policy.
BI was convinced that polices taken in handling Bank Century and its salvaging were taken by considering bigger national interest. It was decided with good will and based on good, professional considerations and norms of existing laws.
The majority of House of Representatives (DPR) members said in a vote on Wednesday that violations had happened in the Bank Century bailout.
Of the 537 members attending the plenary session, 325 voted for "Option C" (a statement ridiculing the bailout) and the other 212 for "Option A" (a statement justifying the bailout).
The government provided a bailout amounting to Rp6.7 trillion for ailing Bank Century during the global financial crisis in late 2008.
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, who at that time was chief of the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK), and Boediono who was Bank Indonesia governor, now vice president, were mentioned as the most responsible persons in the Century bank case.***
