RESIDENT`S LOYALISTS IN E JAVA STAGE RALLY
Surabaya, E Java, Indonesia, March 4 (ANTARA)- About a thousand backers of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono staged a rally here Thursday to show their support for the head of state.
Staging the rally in front of East Java province's legislative assembly building here, some artists on board a trailer truck performed arts and music concert to entertain passers-by.
The demonstration was also filled with political speeches by activists of the Yudhoyono-founded Democratic Party's youth wing.
"We are defending the Yudhoyono-Boediono pair till the last drop of our blood," chairman of the Democratic Party's youth wing, M.Charles Napoleon, shouted to the crowds.
The rally of Yudhoyono's loyalists in East Java was held one day after the parliament's plenary session on the Bank Century bailout scandal.
They called on the Indonesian people not to be easily provoked by what they called "Senayan's political drama". Senayan is the name of an area where the parliament building is located.
Rusli Achmad Palewai, a Democratic Party cadre and member of the East Java legislative assembly, accused the "political drama" of potentially threatening the nation's unity.
He said Vice President Boediono and Finance Minister had done their best to save the nation from the 2008 global economic crisis so that they were eligible for being kept in power until 2014.
At that time, Indonesia was one of only handful of Asian countries which could be free from the global crisis, Palewai said.
During the peaceful rally, the demonstrators and passers-by were entertained by local Dangdut pop singers and Reog dancers.
In Jakarta, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was scheduled to respond to the parliament's final stance on the Bank Century bailout scandal on Thursday evening, one of his aides said.
The President's special assistant for natural disaster aid affairs, Andi Arief, said the head of state would give his response in a speech from the Merdeka Palace at about 08.00 pm local time.
The House of Representatives (DPR) at a plenary session on Wednesday night determined its final stance on the Bank Century scandal through a vote on two options : one justifying the government's bailout policy, and the other ridiculing it.
The ruling Democratic Party, National Mandate Party (PAN) and the National Awakening Party (PKB) which among them controlled 212 votes opted to justify the government's actions in rescuing the failed bank.
But six other parties that together garnered 325 votes, chose to ridicule the Bank Century bailout policy as it had covered up irregularities, violations of banking regulations and criminal laws, instances of corruption and money laundering.
The six were the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Golkar Party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), the United Development Party (PPP), the Great Indonesian Movement Party (Gerindra), and the People's Conscience Party (Hanura).
Vice President Boediono, a former Bank Indonesia (BI) governor, and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani were among those named by several party factions in the House's Bank Century Inquiry Committee as responsible for the Bank Century scandal.
Among the factions that had mentioned Boediono, Sri Mulyani, and other government officials were PDIP, PKS, and Golkar Party.
The central government's decision to rescue failed Bank Century with a total of Rp6.7 trillion in bailout funds has also triggered protests from various elements in the society.***
