CONTINUATION OF CENTURY CASE DEPENDS ON PRESIDENT: MUSLIM FIGURE
Jakarta, March 4 (ANTARA) - The continuation of the Bank Century case will depend on what steps President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will take, an influential Muslim still figure said.
"I still do not know what steps the president will take," KH Hasyim Muzadi, chairman of the country's largest Islamic organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), said on Thursday.
The majority of House of Representatives (DPR) members in a vote at a House plenary session on Wednesday night came to the conclusion that violations of state regulations were committed in the Bank Century bailout.
Of the 537 members attending the House plenary session, 325 voted for "Option C" (a statement ridiculing the bailout) and the other 212 for "Option A" (a statement justifying the bailout).
The vote`s outcome means the majority of DPR members believe violations were committed and there were indications of corruption, violations of banking and state finance policies, money laundering and other general crimes in the process of the merger and acquisition leading to the setting up of Bank Century and its eventual bailout by the government in 2008.
"Now that he knows the results (of the House plenary session), the question arises what steps he will take, be they legal or administrative," he said.
Hasyim said he also did not know whether the president would act as the head of government or head of state.
"It is likely the president will act as the head of state with wider authority for the sake of the state's safety," he said.***
