PRESIDENT : BANK CENTURY CASE MUST BE FOLLOWED UP

Jakarta, March 4 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called Thursday for a thorough probe into the Bank Century bailout case to find indications of irregularities and crimes committed by certain parties.

It was likely those committing the irregularities and crimes had so far been hiding behind the case, he said in responding to the results of the House plenary session on the Bank Century bailout case.

"In regard to the Bank Century case, we must thoroughly follow up on it to find indications of irregularities and crimes committed by certain parties that have inflicted losses on the state," he said.

If mistakes and irregularities were really committed in implementing the policy on the Bank Century bailout, then efforts must be made to establish who must be held responsible for them, he said.

But he added there must be a distinction between administrative mistakes and legal violations so that sanctions could be given fairly.

The majority of House of Representatives (DPR) members in a vote at a House plenary session on Wednesday night came to the conclusion that violations of state regulations were committed in the Bank Century bailout.

Of the 537 members attending the House plenary session, 325 voted for "Option C" (a statement ridiculing the bailout) and the other 212 for "Option A" (a statement justifying the bailout).

The vote`s outcome means the majority of DPR members believe violations were committed and there were indications of corruption, violations of banking and state finance policies, money laundering and other general crimes in the process of the merger and acquisition leading to the setting up of Bank Century and its eventual bailout by the government in 2008.***
