Absence of contact will increase chances of miscalculation: PM

LS LD PM

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) Slamming the opposition for
spreading "disinformation" on foreign policy, India Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh Friday asserted that dialogue with
Pakistan was the only way forward to resolve issues as the
"chances of miscalculation" would increase in absence of any
contact.

Replying to a debate on the Motion of Thanks to the
President's Address, he refused to be on the back-foot on the
government's decision to have Foreign Secretary-level talks
with Pakistan and said it was not a "sudden decision" but a
"calculated one based on weighing all the costs and benefits."
He said India's not talking to Pakistan is "not going to
isolate" it but made it clear that "for any meaningful
dialogue to proceed, the terror machine has to be controlled
by Pakistan even if non-state actors are at work".
Singh rejected the opposition charge that the government
had initiated talks with Pakistan under the US pressure and
underlined that India was not seeking any mediation, including
from Saudi Arabia, in the affairs with Pakistan.
Taking on senior Bhartiya Janata Party leader L K Advani
specifically, he said his contention about US pressure
amounted to "disservice to any government and Prime Minister
of this proud country".
Singh said US President Barack Obama had never, during his
many discussions with him, sought to pressurise India into
taking "one position or the other" vis-a-vis Pakistan.
"Our policy towards Pakistan is consistent, cautious and
realistic," Singh said during his 55-minute reply.
"Dialogue is the only way forward for civilized countries
to resolve their problems....The chances of miscalculation can
only increase in an environment of no contact," he said.
