FOREIGN WORKERS WILL BE REDUCED IN FIVE YEARS, SAYS PRIMAS

KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 (Bernama) -- The number of foreign workers at Indian
and Indian Muslim restaurants will be reduced in stages within the next five
years, Malaysian Indian Restaurant Operators Association (Primas) president R.
Ramalingam said Friday.

He said efforts to reduce their number would be implemented with the
cooperation of the Human Resources Ministry and the Home Ministry.

Towards this end, he said, Primas would employ more locals, including poor
students and single mothers.

"Currently, we are short of 45,000 workers needed at Indian and Indian
Muslim restaurants.

"As such, we have suggested to the Implementation and Coordination Unit in
the Prime Minister's Department to have a programme for poor students at
the University Teknology Mara (UiTM) and single mothers to work on part-time
basis," he said at the launch of the local workers recruitment campaign
organised by Deputy Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister M.Saravanan
here.
