INDUSTRY URGED TO PROVIDE INTERNSHIP

JOHOR BAHARU (Malaysia), March 6 (Bernama) -- Higher Education Minister
Mohamed Khalid Nordin has urged the industry to provide internship to graduands
to ensure they have the necessary skills upon graduation.

He said the industry had been complaining over the lack of skills among
graduands but had not been forthcoming in assisting institutions of higher
learning to enhance the graduands' competency.

"In developed countries, internship is compulsory," he told reporters after
opening Surveyors Career Day organised by Institution of Surveyors Malaysia and
University Teknology Malaysia at the university, here Saturday.

He added that due to time constraints, higher learning institutions were
only able to provide knowledge and basic skills to students.

Khaled also said that career guidance should be emphasised in school and
counsellors should be able to give accurate advise on the choice of career among
students.
