POLICE, STUDENTS AGREE TO SET UP FACT FINDING TEAM

Jakarta, March 6 (ANTARA) - Police and students in Makassar, South Sulawesi, agreed to set up a fact-finding team to investigate the clash between the two sides recently.

The chief of public information of the national police's public relations division, Senior Commissioner Ketut Untung Yoga, said here on Saturday a fact-finding team would be set up after an agreement was made in a meeting between the police, the students, the rectorate and community members.

"One of the agreements is to form a fact-finding team with members from the rectorate, students, the police and community members," he said.

It was agreed in the meeting that the police would act firmly against those involved in crimes be the police officers, students or community members.

"The forum also agreed that demonstrations have to be done orderly and peacefully," he said.

The Makassar city administration, the police and the rectorate would soon make an inventory of damages caused by the clash and repair them.

The demonstration to demand disclosure of the Century Bank bailout controversy by university students in Makassar on March 2-3 turned anarchic marked by clashes involving the police, students and community members.

Police stations and the office of the Islamic Student Association (HMI) have been vandalized.

Community members were involved in the clash after students blocked roads to disrupt their activities.

The vandalizing of the HMI office had triggered demonstrations by HMI activists in Jakarta and several other cities in the country.

Almost all of the solidarity actions were marked by clashes as each side tried to force their will.
