FOUR DRUG USERS ARRESTED IN E KALIMANTAN

Balikpapan, E Kalimantan, March 6 (ANTARA) - The East Kalimantan police keep on fighting drug smugglers and drug users.

On Saturday, four methamphetamine drug users were arrested in Samarinda city, Chief of East Kalimantan police's anti-drug unit Senior Commissioner Arifin said.

The suspects were only identified as "SS", 42, "SA", 34, "NA", 29, and "IS", 33, he said.

The police officers seized 4.7 grams of methamphetamine drug and a smoking tube from two places, Arifin said.

"SS is not only a drug user but also a drug smuggler," he said.

The suspects were charged with Law Number 35/2009 on narcotics with minimum imprisonment of five years, he said.

On the same day, the Jakarta metropolitan police also arrested two drug smugglers, only identified as "MF", 23, and "Her", 29.

MF was caught red handed with 11.4 grams of dried marijuana at Warakas IV street while Her was nabbed at Tambak street in Menteng neighborhood with 0.4 grams of narcotics.

Indonesia is one of the Asian countries, which have seriously been threatened by drug smuggling syndicates.

The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) reported there were 3.6 million drug users in Indonesia in 2008.

The drug users came from various social and professional backgrounds, including artists, musicians, students, politicians, and policemen.

A police officer in Barito Utara district, Central Kalimantan province, was recently fired after a local court found him guilty of consuming methamphetamines.
