MV AMMANA GAPPA SINKS IN MAMUJU WATERS

Mamuju, W Sulawesi, Indonesia, March 7 (ANTARA) - Motor Vessel Ammana Gappa (MV AG) carrying tons of fertilizer sank in the Mamuju waters in Makassar strait, when it was sailing from East Kalimantan to West Sulawesi on Saturday, an official said.

Jusman of the Sea Transportation Directorate General for Navigation and Coastal Radio Communications Affairs said here on Sunday that the motor vessel was carrying 3,688 tons of fertilizer with 22 crew members and one skipper, Samsuddin Sabit, on board.

The accident did not claim lives, however, as all of the passengers were saved by a passing ship, he said.

The vessel, which left Bontang port of East Kalimantan, sank about 27 miles west of Tanjung Rangas, Mamuju.

No report on the causes of the accident was available.

"The 22 crew members and the skipper happened to be floating in the sea because their ship had sunk but they were then saved by passing motor vessel 'Neftunus," he said.***
