Abkhazia will never be part of Georgia again - Bagapsh

SUKHUMI, June 28 (Itar-Tass) -- Whatever the lineup of political
forces in the international scene, Abkhazia will never be part of Georgia again, the president of the self-proclaimed republic, Sergei Bagapsh, told a news conference on Friday.

"I believe that the days of Stalin and Beria (the latter during a
certain period in Soviet history the notorious chief of the secret police
- Itar-Tass), when Abkhazia repeatedly changed hands, are gone never to
return. Yet, somebody apparently cannot reconcile oneself with this. Not a
single square meter of Abkhazian soil will ever be given away, whatever
promises can be made in exchange. We are not in the habit of trading our
Motherland and our land," Bagapsh said, adding that raising this question
again and again would be "an act of foolishness not worth commenting."

The leader of the self-proclaimed republic said that at a meeting with
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow earlier this week a wide range
of issues was discussed, including Abkhazian-Georgian and Abkazian-Russian
relations and the peacekeeping process.

Bagapsh said that relations with Russia remained a priority of
Abkhazia's foreign policy.

"Some feel surprised why the Abkhazian authorities meet with Javier
Solana and US and European diplomats. We should meet with everybody and
listen to everybody, but keep doing what benefits our republic and helps
it gain international recognition. After all, we shall be living not in
vacuum, but in a civilized society, and we've got to have the ability to
conduct a dialogue with everybody who will agree to listen to us in order
to defend the interests of our people," Bagapsh said.

The Abkhazian leader said talks with Georgia might resume only on the
condition Georgian troops were pulled out of the upper part of the Kodori
gorge and an agreement on the non-resumption of hostilities was concluded.

"Otherwise any dialogue will be impossible," Bagapsh said.
Asked if at the meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev earlier
this week the theme of recognition of Abkhazia's independence was
discussed, Bagapsh said, "This question was not raised, but all other
questions discussed at the meeting, I believe, will benefit us and, in the
final count, help us achieve recognition."
