INDONESIAN GOVT LIKELY TO RAISE POWER RATE NEXT JULY

Jakarta, Feb 8 (ANTARA) - The government is expected to raise the basic power rate (TDL) by about 15 percent in the second semester of this year, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said.

"The government may raise the power rate by 15 percent in July, 2010," the minister told a press conference here on Monday.

She said that the government would not raise the TDL in the first semester of this year because it saw that the economic recovery was still ongoing.

Thus, the government`s task is to maintain the purchasing power of the people, she said.

"In essence, the government is willing to maintain the momentum of growth," she said.

Chief of Fiscal Policy Affairs at the Ministry of Finance Anggito Abimanyu said the rate of 15 percent constituted average increase for all categories of consumers but it did not mean that the power rates for the needy would also be raised.

The government decided not to raise the electricity tariff in the first semester of this year because it wanted to focus on improving power supply services for the people.

The government in its revised 2010 budget increased electricity subsidy to Rp54.5 trillion or an increase by Rp16.7 trillion from the previous figure which stood at Rp37.8 trillion.
