PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO ARRIVES IN CANBERRA

Canberra, March 9 (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono arrived in Camberra, Australia, on Tuesday morning for a two-day state visit.

Boarding presidential Garuda jetliner Airbus A330, the president and his entourage arrived at Canberra's ex-air force base Defense Establishment Fairbairn at 8.30 a.m. local time.

Fairbairn is home to Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) No 34 Squadron, which is responsible for the operations of the RAAF VIP transport aircraft and the area is regularly used by visiting heads of state and military aircraft in transit.

At the airport, President Yudhoyono got a state welcome of 21 gun salutes before heading to Canberra Hyatt Hotel.

The president is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Governor-General of Australia Ms Quentin Bryce at the Government House at 11.15 on Tuesday morning.

On the occasion, President Yudhoyono will be awarded the Honorary Companion of the Order of Australia from the Australian government for his cooperation with Australia.

Later in the afternoon, the president will lay a wreath of flowers at the Canberra War Monument.

Before leaving for Sydney on Wednesday, President Yudhoyono will have a bilateral meeting with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to agree on a framework to handle people smuggling on top of a broader base commitment to enhance people-to-people contact between the two countries.

On Thursday, the Indonesian president and his entourage will leave Sydney for Papua New Guinea for a similar state visit.

President Yudhoyono's entourage included around 100 people like Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto, Coordinating Minister for Economy Hatta Rajasa, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, State Minister for Environment Gusti Muhammad Hatta, Agriculture Minister Suswono, and a number of governors.
