INDONESIA'S FISH PORTS NEED REVITALIZATION

Semarang, March 9 (ANTARA) - Fish ports in Indonesia need to be revitalized to increase the fisherman's productivity.

Director of the Coastal Regions Development Institute at Diponegoro University Dr Agus Suherman said here on Tuesday that the fish ports in Indonesia still lacked facilities and infrastructure.

"The fish ports in Indonesia are still in a bad condition and therefore they have to be revitalized to improve the fishermen's productivity," Suherman said.

He said the country's fish ports were classified into three categories, namely coastal fish ports, nusantara (archipelago) fish ports, and ocean fish ports.

"At present we have around 968 coastal fish ports, 14 nusantara fish ports, but only six ocean fish ports and therefore the number is still insufficient," Suherman said.

Therefore he noted that fish port revitalization was urgent because the fishermen's productivity depended on the facilities and infrastructure at the ports.

To improve their productivity, he said, cold storage facilities, loading capacity, and market mechanism at the fish ports need to be taken into account.

"Market mechanism at the fish ports should be prepared well in order that fish supplies can meet the people's demand," Suherman said.
