"SEA-BUCKTHORNS" PROGRAM APPROVED
Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ In accordance with the governmental activity program in 2008-2012, the "Sea-buckthorns" program was approved at the Wednesday's cabinet meeting. The main aims of the program are to prevent desertification, protect soil and environment and to provide people with the fortified fruits by planting sea-buckthorns on 20 thousand hectares area.
As the government considers, the program will help people get a habit of using the fruits, increase Mongolia's exchange reserves by exporting sea-buckthorns to foreign countries, reduce poverty by increasing job places and positively influence health, environment and nature protection and socio-economisc of the country.
First stage of the program will run in 2010-2012 improving a legal environment for those people and enterprisers who keep fruit farms. It will have these people and enterprisers prepare at least five million sowings of sea-buckthorns a year, and will increase the size of areas up to 10 thousand hectares. In addition, the government aims to facilitate the sea-buckthorns harvesting, refine upon techniques and technologies of harvesting and processing the fruits and to create a marketing network.
In frames of the second stage to be realized between 2013 and 2016, the sea-buckthorns sowing fields will reach 20 thousand hectares through strengthening capabilities of planting sea-buckthorns and other fruits. In addition, processing factories will be erected in regions, the manufacturing of fruits will be developed as an independent sector.
Scholars have calculated that one hectare will have 1,200-1,600 sowings, and that one sea-buckthorns bush will produce 7-10 kg of fruits. It means that one ton of fruits will be enough for making 20-50 kg of oil, 600 liters of juice and other products.
By the way, Mongolia planted fruits on 1,200 hectares in 2009. Some 80 per cent of the fruits were sea-buckthorns.
