News Focus: WHIRLWINDS IN MANY REGIONS, HUNDREDS OF HOMES RUINED

Jakarta, March 13 (ANTARA) - More than 500 homes were destroyed and hundreds of trees fell down in several regions of the country after being stricken by whirlwinds recently, and at least one person died.

The whirlwinds were part of the natural disasters which happened in several regions such as in West Java's districts of Tasikmalaya, Garut, Karawang and Sukabumi, East Java's districts of Pacitan, Nganjuk and the city of Surabaya.

It also happened in Pamekasan, Sumenep (Madura Island), East Java, Boyolali, Central Java and Kerinci, Sumatra.

In Tasikmalaya alone, about 100 trees fell down, Jeje Sujedi, head of the city's environmental office said on last Tuesday (March 9).

In addition, in Cigirincing hamlet, Pasirendah village, Ujungberung sub-district, Bandung, West Java province, a teenager Usep (18) died after being crushed by jackfruit tree which was uprooted by a whirlwind on Sunday (Feb.28) at 01.30 pm Western Indonesia Standard Time or WIB.

"The fatal accident occurred when Usep took shelter in a hut and the wind swept over the jackfruit tree that fell and hit the hut killing Usep on the spot.

According to Maman Sukirman, chief of Ujungberung sub-district, the tree fell right on Usep's shoulder. Whirlwinds had several times hit the region, he said.

In the meantime, head of Kerinci district's disaster handling agency, Basyarain, said in Jambi on Friday (March 12) that over the past two weeks, Kerinci district was twice ravaged by whirlwinds which caused many residents' homes to collapse.

Aside from that, whirlwinds on Monday also hit Trosobo neighborhood in Sidoarjo district, toppling dozens of trees as well as electricity and telephone poles.

The whirlwinds that followed torrential rains shook the area at 02.00 pm local time, said a local resident, Selviana Astuti.

A fallen telephone pole destroyed a house`s front but there were no fatalities in the natural disaster, she said.

Despite the absence of fatalities, some motorcycles being parked in front of the damaged house got serious damage, Astuti said.

Tens of houses in Puspa Sari housing complex in Klurak village, Candi sub-district, Sidoarjo district were also seriously damaged by the five-minute-long whirlwind, said Stanly, a local resident.

Over the weekend, 31 houses in three villages of Pakong sub-district on Madura island, East Java, were damaged.

Seven houses in the villages of Bandungan, Bicorong and Pakong were heavily damaged by the whirlwinds, Pakong village administrator, Hakim, said.

The whirlwinds did not only damage 31 houses but also destroyed some restaurants and toppled a number of trees, he said.

According to Hakim, despite the absence of fatalities, the natural disaster had caused the villagers to suffer a material loss of Rp40 million (US$1 =Rp9,380).

Over the past two months, various parts of Indonesia have been hit by earthquakes, floods, landslides and whirlwinds.
Apart from that, whirlwinds damaged tens of houses in three villages of Pakong sub-district on Madura island, East Java lately.

The villages that were hit by the whirlwinds on Saturday and Sunday were Bandungan, Bicorong and Pakong, Pakong village administrator, Hakim, said here Monday.

In Garut district, West Java province, the whirlwind in January hit Kadunogra sub-district, causing a total of 514 houses damaged and the material losses reached Rp 1,047,400,000.

Of the total number, 69 houses seriously damaged, five residents suffered serious injuries, said Dadang Purwana, head of Kedungora sub-district said.

The whirlwind which was followed by heavy rain happened in the villages of Hegarsari, Kadungora, Gandamekar, Talagasari, Cisaat, Cikembulan, Neglasari and Karangmulya, Dadang.

Many of the residents whose homes destroyed by the whirlwind, have fled to their family's houses due to fear of strong wind's strike.

In effort to help the victims, the Garut social service office had extended aid among others rice, instant noodle.

Meanwhile, head of Garut resicential legislative assembly Ahmad Bajuri deplored the lack of relief supplies of staple food for the victims of windstorm disasters in the Kadungora district.

The material losses in Purbalingga district, Central Java following the whirlwind strike in this region in mid January, 2010 at least reached Rp613 millions, said Supriyanto, chief of
public protection affairs office.

According to him, the whirlwind strike in Kejobong sub-district caused material losses for about Rp517 millions.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted extremely bad weather in parts of Indonesia in the March 12-15, 2010 period.

According to BMKG Friday the extreme weather conditions may include heavy downfalls coupled with lightning and strong winds.

These areas are the western coastal region of the southern parts of Sumatra, several locations in South Sumatra and Lampung, western and southern parts of Kalimantan, in addition to parts in Banten and West Java, East Java, and the central and southeastern parts of Sulawesi, Southeast Maluku, central and southern parts of Papua.***
