Information minister to attend Non-Aligned Conference
(KPL) Minister of Information and Culture Mounkeo Ouraboun and his
delegation left Vientiane, on 26 June, to attend the 7th Non-Aligned
Movement Countries Conference of Ministers of Information (COMINAC) in Margarita Island, Venezuela, to be held from July 2-4.
Mr Mounkeo will join other ministers of information from Non-Aligned
Countries to discuss and share their idea on the topic "Challenges and proposition of the voice of the South in the face of current trends in the sphere of information and communication."
This continues to be a high priority issue for developing countries given the uneven and exclusionary effects of the so called neo-liberal globalisation process that has been imposed by the world's largest political and financial power centres. This seventh conference will be a good opportunity to enhance some ongoing proposals promoted by countries of the South, such as the NAM News Network, headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The NAM Network startup and commissioning costs were covered by Malaysia as a result of the agreements reached at the sixth COMINAC. This conference will see the rotating Chair shift from Malaysia to Venezuela, who will begin their three year term.
The seventh conference will consist of two segments: a high level experts meeting, scheduled for July 2, that will discuss the agenda, as well as the draft declaration, and the Meeting of Ministers of Information, which will be held on July 3 and 4, when the general debate of major issues on the agenda will take place, and the final document of the conference will be approved.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr Mounkeo and his delegation will travel to Cuba on an official state visit, before returning to Laos.
A farewell ceremony for the delegation took place at the Ministry of
Information and Culture on 26 June, attended by Deputy Minister of
Information and Culture Prof, Dr Bosengkham Vongdara, Cuba Ambassador to Laos Ms Ivonne Suarez Roche and other high ranking officials, as well as editors in Chief of Newspapers, TV, and radio stations.
