NEW ECONOMIC MODEL WILL BREAK DOWN RACIAL BARRIERS, SAYS DPM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 (Bernama) -- The New Economic Model (NEM) to be
launched soon will be capable of being an important instrument for breaking down
racial barriers and prejudices in Malaysia.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said under NEM, all races
would have a role and opportunity to make full use of their potential, and
compete fairly in the economic sector.

He believes that when every citizen regardless of race and religion is
guaranteed of equal rights, then true racial unity and harmony can be realised.

"Hence, I view this New Economic Model not just as an economic model.

"It is an important instrument for bringing down the racial barriers,
erasing racial prejudices and building a glorious future for the country," he
said at a 1Malaysia dinner function organised by the Kuala Lumpur Chinese
Assembly Hall, here, Tuesday night.

The deputy prime minister suggested that the private sector continue to play
an important role in spurring the country's economic growth.

In this respect, he said, the Chinese business community should venture into
new fields which could boost their role as the link between the Chinese
community and the other communities and between the Chinese community and the
government.

He said new areas especially in the services sector, infrastructure
development, green technology and broadband technology needed to be explored as
these were important in the modern economy.

"Therefore, I hope very much that associations like the Chinese Assembly
Hall would come forward and work together with the government to realise this
noble aim," he added.
