Russia worried over security situation in Asia-Pacific region.
MOSCOW, March 18 (Itar-Tass) - Russia is worried over the security
situation in the Asia-Pacific region (APR), said on Thursday Russian
Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin in the Federation Council upper
chamber at a conference on security in the Asia-Pacific area.
"The APR is a region where three-quarters of our country are located,"
the diplomat noted. "These are not only huge wealth and human resources,
but also problems that accumulated over the past years. Therefore, it is a
difficult task to develop economically our eastern territories."
Borodavkin emphasised that "the APR is now full of activities, having
importance not only for our country, but also for a new world order."
"However," he continued, "while political and economic processes in the
APR are developing positively, the situation with security cannot help
provoking concern."
Borodavkin pointed to the situation in the Korean Peninsula, terrorism
and extremism in some countries as well as unsettled territorial questions
among problems, affecting security in the region.
"Problems of terrorism and separatism play destabilising influence,"
Borodavkin said with confidence. "It's impossible to fight these problems
single-handed. Russia conducts active cooperation with partners in the
APR, both in the bilateral and multilateral formats." "Our relations with
China, Mongolia and South Korea have become a graphic example of
cooperation in the security sphere," the diplomat underlined.
He called attention to the fact that the Japanese territorial claims
are among questions, affecting security of Russia. "We shall continue
patient work on developing partnership relations with Japan: we are sure
this will lead the sides to mutually acceptable ways of settling this
question," Borodavkin said.
The diplomat also pointed to the need for joining integration
processes in the APR, taking into account the Russian presidency in the
APEC in 2012 as well as touched on the question on inadmissibility of
turning Siberia and the Russian Far East into commodity sources which will
be dependent on foreign economies.
In conclusion, Borodavkin pointed to the importance of cooperation
between Russia and China in the Asia-Pacific region.
