RETREADED TYRES POSE DANGER TO MOTORISTS
KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 (Bernama) -- The Federation of Malaysian Consumers
Associations (Fomca) has urged the authorities to ban the use of retreaded tyres
by commercial vehicles.
Fomca advisor Datuk Mohd Hamdan Adnan said shreds of such tyres could
be found littering roads and highways and this posed danger to motorcyclists and
drivers of small cars, especially at night.
He said commercial vehicles should use new standard tyres of good quality
which are safer.
"We can see for ourselves the shreds of retreaded tyres all over our roads,"
he told Bernama.
Mohd Hamdan cited a personal experience when he took a bus to Melaka
recently and heard the sound of its tyres peeling, but the bus driver "acted
like nothing was wrong until I told him to stop and change the tyre."
He added that most of the retreaded tyres in the country were of poor
quality, which is why pieces of it could be found all over the roads.
