BOEDIONO'S DREAM ACTUALLY WAS BECOMING EDUCATION MINISTER
Bekasi, March 19 (ANTARA) - Vice President Boediono said early in his career his dream was actually to become national education minister,
"I used to dream of becoming national education minister but I never got appointed to the post. Instead, I was given another position in the government," the vice president said during a dialog with students of SMA-1 (Senior High-school I) in Bekasi on Friday.
The former Bank Indonesia (central bank) governor said he was happy to be among school students and academics.
But as vice president, Boediono said, he had to assist President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in running the government of the Republic of Indonesia for the next five years.
Reminiscing about his past career as an academic, the vice president said that becoming a teacher was the fulfillment of an inner call without any intention to seek material riches.
He said whether today's school children would be leaders of the next generation entirely depended on the education they received from their teachers.
"Teachers will be very happy and content if their students become greater and more successful than them," Boediono said.
The vice president added that when he was a teacher and lecturer, it was not material things or riches that he pursued.
"If I had wanted to become rich at the time, I would have worked abroad and collected dollars," the vice president said.
He said the fate of the nation in the future depended on today's students acquiring the best possible education at schools so that they would be the next generation's qualified national leaders.
During his visit to SMA-1, one of West Java's international standard schools, Boediono was accompanied by National Education Minister Muhamad Nuh, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono, Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali, Public Works Minister Joko Kirmanto, State Minister for Environment Gusti M Hatta, State Enterprises Minister Mustafa Abubakar, West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan, and state oil company PT Pertamina president director Karen Agustiawan.
