Rupee depreciates by five paise vs dlr
Mumbai, Mar 19 (PTI) The rupee Friday depreciated by five
paise against the US currency to close at 45.49 due to
sustained dollar demand from banks and importers.
After narrow movements at the Interbank Foreign Exchange
(Forex) market, the domestic unit settled at 45.49/50 a
dollar, a loss of 5 paise over the previous close.
Dealers said dollar demand from importers, mainly oil
companies, mainly weighed on the rupee. Some banks were also
said to be small buyers on behalf of their clients.
Stronger dollar in the overseas markets too weighed on
the rupee.
The dollar rose Thursday by the most in a month in New
York amid signs of increasing tensions within Europe over an
aid plan for the debt-strapped Greek government.
However, the Indian benchmark Sensex today improved
further by nearly 59 points or 0.34 per cent. Asian indices
too ended firm Friday.
Foreign institutional investors pumped in a whopping over
USD 3 billion in the current month so far, which stem the
further fall in the rupee. MORE PTI VMP
